Precision Urology Hospital & Kidney Transplant Center celebrated Indian Organ Donation Day on 3rd August 2024. A day-long celebration was planned and executed with the aim to promote the importance of organ donation and raise awareness about the life-saving impact of organ donation. We invited and felicitated some of our past kidney donors to recognize their contribution. The audience comprised of past donors & recipients, potential donors & recipients, and members of PUH staff.
While addressing
the audience, Dr Shashikant Mishra, Medical Director & Senior Consultant Urologist,
Precision Urology Hospital, said, “Though there are several myths and misconceptions about organ donation, I would like to
emphasize that organ donation is a safe and well-regulated medical procedure”.
The kidney transplant team at PUH includes four urologists- Dr Shashikant
Mishra, Dr Avneet Gupta, Dr Aditya PS Sengar, and Dr Gyvi Gaurav- two
nephrologists- Dr Amit Singh and Dr Ranjeet Singh- and Dr Vandana Mishra, Head
of Anaesthesiology & Chief Medical Superintendent, Precision Urology
Hospital. The team elucidated that PUH follows strict protocols to ensure donor
safety and recovery. The audience was given an overview of the live donor
program. They were informed about the screening and evaluation process where
potential living donors undergo thorough medical and psychological evaluations
to ensure they are healthy enough to donate without compromising their
well-being. With the team of doctors speaking to them, the potential donors in
the audience could see that the kidney
donation surgery in PUH is performed by experienced surgeons who deploy safe
and advanced medical practices. Some of the past donors corroborated this and
highlighted that at PUH, donors received comprehensive care
before, during, and after the donation. They were monitored for any
complications and provided with appropriate follow-up care.
As part of recognizing the work of our transplant support staff, we felicitated 15 staff members who have contributed to the successful running of PUH’s transplant program. These included the transplant coordinators, nurses from the kidney transplant unit, and OT technicians who assist in the kidney transplant surgery.
PUH used the event to encourage more people to become registered donors, pinpointing that the initiative is crucial as there is a significant need for organs for transplantation, and a large number of patients are on waiting lists for organ transplants. Encouraged by this, a few persons expressed their wish to pledge their organs. As the event came to a close, free meal boxes were distributed to all the guests and staff.
After this, an inter-departmental poster-making competition was organized to spread awareness about the significance of organ donation in saving lives. Several departments participated, with the Pharmacy and MRD departments winning the first and second prize, respectively.
